Sungwon Yang, cello

Former assistant to Janos Starker at Indiana University, Sungwon Yang has concertized all over the world as soloist and as a member of the Kumho Asiana String Quartet. He has given highly acclaimed solo recitals in prestigious halls such as Alice Tully Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Salle Gaveau in Paris, Terrace Theater at Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and Tsuda Hall in Tokyo. In his previous seasons, his performances also took him to other major cities such as London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Prague, Budapest, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Warsaw, Boston, Seattle, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Osaka, Kyoto, Shanghai, Beijing and Sydney. Most recently, Mr. Yang performed in Essen, Paris, Rome, and in tours throughout Japan and Korea.

Mr. Yang’s performances of the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto, Brahms Double Concerto, and Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with L’Orchestre Symphonique Francais were broadcast on French National TV and all over Europe through Eurovision. In addition, he has given numerous live radio concerts for N.H.K of Japan and K.B.S. of Korea.

He has also recorded for the Delos label as a member of the Kumho Asiana String Quartet and he is currently recording the complete Cello repertoire of the Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. The first of the two-CD project, which will include the Solo Sonata and the Sonata for Cello and Piano, will be released in March, 2000. In addition, as a frequent performer of contemporary music, he regularly commissions new works and has recorded many of them for radio broadcasts in France, U.S., Japan and Korea.

A native of Seoul, Korea, Mr. Yang graduated from the Paris Conservatory and Indiana University. Currently, he is a full time faculty at the Korean National Institute of Arts, and has been regularly invited to be faculty performer at various international music festivals such as the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Maine and Flaine Musique in France.
