Sang Min Park, cello

In May 1987, seventeen year old Sang Min Park became a member of the cello section of the Philadelphia Orchestra under Maestro Riccardo Mutti. He was the youngest ever to become a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He began studying the cello at the age of six in Seoul, Korea. His extraordinary talent compelled his family to emmigrate to the United States in 1979 where he continued his training under Channing Robbins and Bill Stokking at the Juilliard Scool of Music, and was selected as a soloist with the Juilliard pre-college orchestra in 1980. He won the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra's Annual Young Artist Audition in 1981 and received the New Jersey Governor's Award for outstanding achievement in 1982. He was the winner in the Elgar Competition at the Juilliard in 1984, and in 1985, was selected as the Presidential Scholar in Music and received the Presidential Award. The same year, he eceived the Korean President's Scholarship Award and was invited to perform with Maestro Myung Hoon Chung in Seoul Korea. Since joining the Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. Park appears frequently as a recitalist and featured artist throughout the United States and Korea. He recently performed the Brahms Double Concerto with Norman Carol, the Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, Korea.
