Catherine Cho, violin

Catherine Cho made her debut at age eleven performing the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 with the Tivolis Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen, Denmark. Three years later, she performed Vieuxtemps's Fifth Violin Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Kenneth Jean. She has since appeared as soloist with major orchestras throughout North America and Europe including Montréal Symphony Orchestra, North Carolina Symphony, the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra with conductor Carl St. Clair, the National Orchestra of Belgium, the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona of Spain, Baden-Baden Symphony of Germany.

Miss Cho is a Silver Medalist of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium in Brussels in June 1989. Subsequently she gave recitals and had solo appearances with orchestras throughout Belgium. In 1988 she was awarded the Level One Music Award of the Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. That same year she was selected as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and received a medallion from the White House. With this award she performed at the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Miss Cho also won a special performance prize at the Third Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis for her performance of Caprices by Niccolo Paganini. In 1987 she won the second prize at the 19th Montréal International Music Competition. She has won numerous national competitions including the CKLW Quest for the Best, and the 1987 Bryan Young Artist National String Competition, the Aspen Music Festival Concerto Competition, and the Juilliard School Concerto Competition.

Recital appearances include the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Aspen Music Festival, the Salzburg Mozarteum, and a recent New York recital debut at Merkin Concert Hall. Her award-winning performance of William Walton's Violin Concerto has recently been released on compact disc in Europe on the ICI label. Miss Cho, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, began her studies at the age of four with Michael Avsharian, Jr., from 1983 to 1987 she studied with Ruggiero Ricci in Ann Arbor, Michigan and from 1987 to 1988 was a pupil of Franco Gulli. She has received the Starling Foundation and Dorothy DeLay scholarships at The Juilliard School. She has been studying with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang since summer of 1988.
